Dear Mr Fitzpatrick
THE LAN(D)SBURY ESTATE
Thank you for your letter of 4 March and enclosed correspondence from Slmon
Kempson.
Although a landmark development from the Festival of Britain, the Lan(d)sbury Estate
is not listed. It is not subject to listed building control and English Heritage has had
very little involvement other than general discussions with Tawer Hamlets Council
about how best to maintain the buildings. The Estate has been designated a
Conservation Area which means that consent is required to demolish any of the
buildings. In addition, planning permission is required to carry out certain changes
to the external appearance of single family houses.
I have spoken to Mark Hutton, Tower Hamlet`s conservation officer, who assures me
that the planning department is not currently involved in any discussions with the
Landsbury Estate Steering Group about repair of ihe bulldings. He is unaware of
any unresolved issues which flow from the Estate's designation as a conservation
area. Rather, the architectural interest of the buildings has meant that extra
investment has been levered into the Estate. Formation of a Regeneration
Company, grant aid towards repair of the market pface and construction of a new
ideas store are all initiatives which will help fund improvements for the beneft of
residents.
Mark Hutton is very willing to meet the steering group and discuss their concerns.
Whilst the Estate is of architectural interest, it is not listed and there seems to be
some misunderstanding about the cost of repairs. Mr Hutton will be abie to explain
the position. His address is London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Conservation Urban
Design, 41-47 Bow Road, Bow, London E2 2B5. Afternativefy he can be contacted
on 020 7364 5372.
I hope this is hefpful but please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can be of any further assistance.
Yours sincerely
P.F. PUGH
